If you have a ‘spouse’ field on your customized donor checkout form, here is how the counts work.
If spouse has info in the field, gifts increment by 2 donors. The donation amount increments by the donation amount one time.
If a spouse comes back to your portal (not just the campaign, but the largest public-facing ‘bucket’ available, usually a portal) and donates using themself as the primary donor and a different email address, both instances of that spouse’s name will count as a unique donation, as the system cannot account for a name as a measure of uniqueness alone.
The system validates against email addresses, so if you have a donor that gives online, and whether or not they enter a spouse, if you enter some donation offline afterward, if the email address is the same the donor count will not increase, but the dollar amount will.
